Zacatecas mass killing of 10 people prompts security crackdown
On 18 July 2026, ten men were discovered dead in the Mexican state of Zacatecas, in the municipalities of Pánuco, Morelos and Saín Alto. The victims included former mayor Ignacio Castrejón Valdez of Sombrerete, two Fresnillo officials, a firefighter, several local businessmen and a cattle‑rancher. Autopsies showed eight died from strangulation and two from gunshot wounds.
State authorities opened investigations focusing on possible extortion and alleged collusion of public officials with organized crime. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office and the state Attorney General’s Office linked the crime to activities of the Sinaloa cartel and the CJNG, though the exact group remains under inquiry.
Governor David Monreal Ávila described the episode as a “barbaric act,” pledged that “those who ordered this will pay,” and launched an anti‑extortion campaign. Over 400 security personnel – Army troops, National Guard units and state police – were deployed under “Operación Rastrillo.” President Claudia Sheinbaum announced additional federal support and accelerated construction of a new IMSS megahospital in Guadalupe. Five suspects have been arrested, with weapons, drugs and communication equipment seized.
The investigation continues, with state and federal agencies coordinating intelligence, forensic analysis and field operations to locate any additional perpetrators.
