Zacatecas tortilla shops distribute U.S. migrant return campaign
A campaign promoting the voluntary return of migrants to Mexico has appeared in local tortilla shops in Guadalupe, Zacatecas. The campaign uses free paper wraps for tortillas, featuring the United States flag and official government logos to reach households.
The messaging encourages families to use the ‘CBP Home App’ to facilitate the return of relatives living in the United States. Some materials include phrases such as ‘Do you miss him? Tell him about the CBP Home App’ and mention a potential financial incentive of $2,600 for those who choose to return voluntarily.
Local merchants reported that the paper was distributed for free by individuals claiming to represent the United States Embassy. While some residents expressed interest in the program as a way to reunite with family, the campaign has drawn attention due to its unconventional distribution method in a region with a high number of migrants and their descendants living in the U.S.
