A wave of violence has resurfaced in the Mexican state of Zacatecas following the discovery of ten bodies. On July 18, five victims were found hanging from a bridge in the small community of Pozos de Gamboa. Shortly after, five more bodies were discovered in the surrounding areas.

The victims reportedly include a former mayor, public officials, and entrepreneurs from various parts of the state. This escalation follows a period of significant decline in violence; official data shows that intentional homicides in Zacatecas dropped from approximately 1,300 in 2022 to 144 in 2025.

The violence is attributed to a territorial conflict between the Jalisco Nueva Generación and Sinaloa cartels, who are competing for control of the region due to its strategic importance for drug trafficking routes toward the United States. Local authorities have launched an investigation and requested support from the army and the National Guard to restore order.
