Resident Evil director removes humor to enhance horror tone

Director Zach Cregger has significantly reduced the amount of humor in the upcoming Resident Evil film following feedback from test screenings. While audiences enjoyed the movie, they reported that it was “too funny” for a horror production, noting that excessive jokes interfered with the tension and atmosphere.

Cregger, who has a background in comedy with the group The Whitest Kids U’ Know, stated that he removed as many jokes as possible during the editing process. He noted that the more serious version was better received by test audiences and that he personally preferred the new cut. He emphasized that even a small amount of humor can go a long way in a horror film.

The film follows a medical courier, played by Austin Abrams, attempting to deliver supplies to Raccoon City General Hospital during an outbreak. The production features a cast including Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser, with a screenplay co-written by Cregger and Shay Hatten. The film is scheduled for release on September 18, 2026.
