Director Zach Cregger is preparing for the September 2026 release of his Resident Evil film, an original story set within the Capcom universe that features a new protagonist. Cregger has addressed fan backlash regarding the departure from established game characters, stating he feels like he has been on an “apology tour” to convince skeptics that the film is a genuine survival horror experience rather than a mere brand exercise.
