Resident Evil reboot reveals R-rated gore and first-person footage

New footage and details have been released for the upcoming Resident Evil film reboot directed by Zach Cregger, scheduled for theatrical release on September 18, 2026. The film has received an R rating from the MPA for “strong bloody violence, gore, and language throughout,” marking a departure from the descriptions of previous live-action entries in the franchise.

Rather than a direct adaptation of a specific game, the film presents an original story set in a modern-day, snow-covered Raccoon City. The plot follows Bryan Hodukavich (played by Austin Abrams), a medical courier caught in a T-Virus outbreak. New footage reveals that the film will incorporate first-person sequences to mimic the gameplay experience, alongside iconic elements such as weapon progression, green herbs, healing sprays, and typewriters.

Production details confirm that the Umbrella Corp is involved in the narrative, as evidenced by delivery documentation for the protagonist's cargo. The film is being produced by Sony Pictures, Constantin Film, and Davis Films, and will be available in IMAX.
