Zach Merrett cites media pressure and mental strain amid Essendon future talks
Essendon midfielder Zach Merrett said the intense and "obsessive" media scrutiny of his performance and trade prospects has caused him "dark moments" and a noticeable impact on his mental wellbeing. He revealed he confronted unnamed media figures privately after a failed attempt to move to Hawthorn during the previous trade period, while remaining under contract with Essendon until the end of 2027.
Merrett, who stepped down as club captain during the off‑season, said the constant speculation has crossed a line and added emotional strain to an already challenging season. He urged critics to back their opinions with data and stressed he will decide on his future only after the season ends. The player also backed Essendon president Andrew Welsh and the club’s search for a permanent senior coach.
The comments were made at the AFL’s Kids Footy Month launch and highlight concerns about media pressure on professional athletes in the Australian Football League.
