Zack Gelof sues Detroit Tigers over Comerica Park injury
Oakland Athletics utility player Zack Gelof has filed a lawsuit in Wayne County Circuit Court against the Detroit Tigers, Ilitch Holdings, and the Detroit-Wayne County Stadium Authority. The legal action stems from an injury sustained on July 9 during a game at Comerica Park.
Gelof alleges that while making a sliding catch in foul territory, his right knee violently struck an exposed and dangerous metal fence that protruded into the playing area. The collision reportedly caused a deep laceration beneath his kneecap, narrowly missing the patellar tendon, and tore his uniform. The injury sidelined the 26-year-old player for approximately one month.
The lawsuit claims the defendants were negligent, noting that padding was installed in the area only after the incident occurred. Gelof’s attorney, Jon Marko, stated that the injury could have been prevented through basic and inexpensive design changes. Gelof is seeking unspecified compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.
