Zack Snyder seeks to adapt The Dark Knight Returns

Director Zack Snyder has expressed interest in adapting Frank Miller’s ‘The Dark Knight Returns,’ provided he is permitted to do so outside of the DC Universe. Snyder views the graphic novel as a standalone work that happens to feature superheroes.

Snyder explained that adapting both ‘Watchmen’ and ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ would represent the “complete cycle of the superhero comic book medium.” He noted that while ‘Watchmen’ marked the beginning of the superhero film era, ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ was originally written for an audience exhausted by comic books. Snyder suggested that a film adaptation now would resonate with modern audiences who may be experiencing similar fatigue with the superhero genre.

Insiders suggest that Snyder is well-prepared for such a project, with some reports indicating that storyboards may already exist.
