Zadar University hosts workshop on ancient cadastre and historical maps
The University of Zadar and the State Archives in Zadar held a workshop titled ‘From the Archive to the Landscape’ as part of the SMS project. The initiative focuses on valuing the spatial and social changes within the ancient Zadar cadastre.
Researchers examined the Zadar region through various lenses, including archival documents, historical maps, archaeological data, and personal memories. The goal was to understand how these sources illustrate changes in land use, agriculture, and tourism.
Ante Gverić, Director of the State Archives, highlighted the essential role of archives for archaeologists. Josip Faričić, Rector of the University of Zadar, noted that historical maps from the 16th to 20th centuries are vital for studying the development of the Zadar territory, as they contain unique topographical and cadastral data.
