Zagreb advances smart traffic management megaproject
The City of Zagreb is entering the third phase of its Traffic Management Center megaproject, an initiative designed to improve metropolitan traffic flow through smart infrastructure. The project involves connecting key city intersections with smart traffic lights, advanced sensors, and cameras to enable real-time traffic monitoring and adaptation.
The system allows for the prioritization of public transport and the reprogramming of signals during roadworks or following traffic accidents. Currently, the project is expanding to 48 new intersections, including locations such as Šoljanova, Ilica, and Vukovarska. The fourth phase of the project has entered the preliminary consultation stage, with a public procurement value estimated at five million euros excluding VAT.
By the end of the first phase, 161 intersections were connected. The long-term goal is to integrate all 487 intersections in Zagreb into this unified management system by 2028. A central base located at Branimirova 71b monitors traffic changes live using approximately 700 cameras distributed throughout the city.
