Zagreb allocates 1.7 million euros for participatory budgeting
The City of Zagreb has launched the third edition of its participatory budgeting project, ‘Daj prijedlog za novi kvart’ (Give a proposal for a new neighborhood). For this cycle, the city has allocated over 1.7 million euros to fund citizen-led initiatives. Approximately 550 proposals were submitted, covering various improvements such as playground renovations, park path upgrades, and school courtyard landscaping.
The project currently involves 13 of Zagreb's 17 city districts, with four districts—Donja Dubrava, Gornja Dubrava, Brezovica, and Sesvete—not participating this year. Mayor Tomislav Tomašević noted that the number of proposals has doubled compared to the previous year.
Zagreb was recently recognized by the Open Government Partnership (OGP) as a global winner in the Fiscal Openness category at a summit in Spain. The city maintains a high level of fiscal transparency, making over 130,000 annual transactions accessible to the public. Citizens can vote for their preferred projects until November 22.
