Zagreb approves plan to reduce single-use plastic use
The Zagreb City Assembly has passed a decision to reduce the use of plastic products and promote sustainable practices within the city. The new regulations will apply to city administrative bodies, public institutions, and municipal companies, including ZET and Zagreb Holding, as well as public events organized by the City of Zagreb.
The initiative aims to phase out single-use plastics such as bottles, cups, plates, cutlery, and straws, replacing them with reusable items or materials like metal, glass, wood, paper, and bamboo. A key component of the plan is the mandatory introduction of reusable cups and returnable systems at public events starting January 1, 2027.
To ensure a manageable transition, the city will allow existing stocks of plastic products to be used until they are exhausted. Exceptions may be granted for temporary use in cases involving specific health, safety, or technical requirements. The policy also emphasizes green public procurement and improved waste separation at the source.
