Zagreb block renewal after quake advances, Minister Bačić tours sites

More than a year after the 2020‑2021 Zagreb earthquakes, the city is implementing a "block renewal" programme that restores entire apartment blocks rather than individual buildings. The Ministry of Spatial Planning, Construction and State Property introduced the concept in 2024, targeting eight blocks comprising roughly 1,129 housing units, with procurement for projects such as Block 20 valued at about €4.8 million.

Nearly €3 billion has been spent on post‑quake reconstruction, over 700 construction sites have opened and two‑thirds of them are complete. To date 559 replacement family houses have been built, and the goal is 1,050 by the end of 2027, with the overall rebuilding effort slated to finish by 2030, focusing on structural renovation of around 1,000 multi‑family buildings. Minister of Spatial Planning, Construction and State Property Branko Bačić visited a replacement house for the Malčić family in Čučerje and inspected the Block 20 site on Prilaz Đure Deželića, where residents expressed satisfaction with their new homes.
