Zagreb expands organic food project to kindergartens

Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević has announced the expansion of the ‘Eco food’ project to include preschool institutions starting this autumn. Previously limited to primary schools, the initiative will now provide organic meals to approximately 5,000 children across nine kindergartens, joining the 16,000 students in 32 schools already participating in the program.

In total, the project will serve roughly 21,000 children daily, with approximately 10,000 healthy meals prepared each day. The program aims to provide high-quality, locally sourced nutrition while supporting the domestic economy, as over 90 percent of the food is sourced from Croatian producers. The initiative also seeks to benefit the environment by reducing transport emissions and promoting sustainable farming practices.

Since its inception with the introduction of organic apples in late 2024, the project has grown to include up to 49 different certified organic products, such as fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs, honey, olive oil, bread, and various grain products.
