Zagreb Mayor addresses utility strike and tax reform disputes

Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević addressed citizens following a three-day strike by workers from Zagreb Holding and ZET, which disrupted public transport and waste collection services. While acknowledging the legitimacy of the right to strike for better wages, Tomašević criticized the organization of this specific action, stating it did not follow rules regarding essential services for public health and safety. He noted that rebuilding trust between the administration, workers, and citizens will take time.

In a separate political context, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković responded to concerns raised by Tomašević regarding a tax reform estimated to cost the city budget 85 million euros. Plenković countered by highlighting the significant growth in tax revenues in Zagreb over the last decade. The discussion also touched upon broader fiscal trends in Croatia, noting substantial increases in state and municipal budgets across various cities since 2016.
