Zagreb mayor Tomašević criticised over stalled construction and waste contracts

Opposition members of the Drito club used a city council session to denounce the administration of Zagreb mayor Tomislav Tomašević. They highlighted numerous unfinished construction sites, such as months‑long excavations on Trešnjevka streets and a large pothole at the Krapinska‑Trakošćanska‑Ozaljska intersection, where work has started but no workers are present. Safety concerns were raised after the state inspectorate closed sites on Savska, Vukovarska and Zvonimirova streets for regulatory breaches, and after a glass pane fell onto passengers at the main bus station, which critics say reflects decades of neglected maintenance.

Council members also attacked the city’s waste‑management strategy, accusing the mayor of paying private firms for mixed‑waste collection and increasing costs after the city raised recycling rates. The mayor responded by noting that 62 % of the planned €292 million investment programme has been executed, citing projects such as the renewal of a 70‑year‑old water pipe in Vukovarska and the ongoing renovation of Trg Krešimira Ćosića. He defended the waste‑handling approach as a necessary transition and emphasized forthcoming investments financed jointly by the city budget and EU funds. The debate also touched on the mayor’s stance on commemorating the 1995 Srbs massacre, which he said he would respect as a matter of state protocol.
