Male lion Uganda, a five‑year‑old specimen from Sigean, France, attacked and killed the female lion Tayri, a one‑year‑older lioness from Veszprém, Hungary, in the Zagreb Zoo. Both animals arrived less than three weeks earlier as part of a European breeding programme for the endangered northern African lion population, which the IUCN lists as Endangered with only about 250 individuals remaining in the wild.

The pair were first successfully introduced on 10 July and kept together from 21 July in the outdoor enclosure “Lavlja stijena Kidepo”. Around 13:00 on the day of the incident, about 50‑60 visitors, including children, witnessed the rapid attack. Zoo staff secured the area, took immediate safety measures for people and animals, and announced a cooperation with external experts to investigate the cause.

Director Ivan Cizelj said the attack was “extremely quick” and typical of lion behaviour, stressing that the male will remain at the zoo while an international panel assesses his future in the breeding programme. The animal‑rights group Prijatelji životinja criticised the zoo, arguing that the tragedy results from the zoo system of captive breeding rather than the lion’s aggression.
