Zagreb Zoo sets record with three endangered sable antelope births
The Zagreb Zoo has achieved a record in the breeding of the endangered sable antelope, with three calves born this year. This marks the highest number of offspring for the species recorded at the facility in a single year.
The first calf, Pistacio, was born in late February, followed by Rameau in mid-April. The third calf, born recently, has yet to be named. The current herd in Zagreb consists of seven individuals, including four adults: one male and three females.
Zoo Director Ivan Cizelj noted that while previous years with a single birth were considered successful, this year’s results have exceeded expectations. The breeding program is part of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) efforts to maintain healthy, sustainable populations for over 500 species. The offspring participate in European breeding programs, with their relocation to other institutions managed by program coordinators to support species conservation.
