Zahir Mathis to miss Maryland football season due to injury

Maryland football sophomore edge rusher Zahir Mathis will miss the entire 2026-27 season due to an injury sustained during fall practice. The injury was confirmed by a school spokesperson.

Mathis, a former freshman All-American, was expected to be a cornerstone of the Terrapins' defensive line. Last season, he recorded six sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss. His absence leaves a significant gap in the team's pass-rushing production, particularly alongside teammate Sidney Stewart.

To fill the void, incoming five-star recruit Zion Elee is expected to take on a larger role opposite Stewart. Other players, including redshirt sophomore DD Holmes and sophomore Nahsir Taylor, may also see increased playing time as the defense prepares for the upcoming season.
