Journalist Zahra Joya has described the current situation for women in Afghanistan as a ‘gender apartheid’ and an ‘open-air prison.’ Living in exile in London, Joya highlights the systemic repression enacted by the Taliban regime.

Since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, the supreme leader has issued over 400 decrees, more than 100 of which specifically target women. These restrictions have effectively removed women from public life, banning them from secondary schools, universities, parks, and gyms. Additionally, women are required to have a male guardian, or mahram, for any movement.

Joya, who founded Rukhshana Media, uses her platform to coordinate and publish secret reports from a network of female journalists remaining in Afghanistan. She has called upon the international community to increase efforts to assist women in escaping these conditions of submission.
