Zahuapan River sanitation project featured in international exhibition

The Zahuapan River sanitation project and the Xicohtzinco Wastewater Treatment Plant (PTAR) have been selected for the international environmental exhibition ‘Un planeta, un compromiso compartido’ (One planet, a shared commitment) at Chapultepec Forest in Mexico City.

Driven by the Government of Tlaxcala in collaboration with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the initiative aims to reduce pollutant discharges into the Zahuapan River. The project focuses on treating and reusing wastewater for productive activities, primarily agricultural irrigation, to support the recovery of the Atoyac Basin.

The project was recognized by the LAIF City Life program in 2024 for its focus on sustainable urban development. The State Water and Sanitation Commission (CEAS) presented the technical and environmental scope of the infrastructure, which is intended to benefit regional ecosystems and local communities.
