Zakaria Amara granted full parole by Canada's Parole Board

Zakaria Amara, a ringleader of the thwarted Toronto 18 terror plot, has been granted full parole by the Parole Board of Canada. The board determined that the 41-year-old no longer shows “any signs of holding onto extremist beliefs or radical ideologies.”

Amara had been on day parole for four years under strict supervision. The board's decision noted that he underwent a deradicalization process while incarcerated and demonstrated “positive change, both in attitude and in behaviour.” During his day parole, his internet use, relationships, and friendships were closely monitored with no reported breaches.

As part of his release, Amara is prohibited from communicating with individuals involved in criminal activity or those with extremist ideologies. He must also continue participating in counseling, undergo financial monitoring, and adhere to restrictions on his phone and internet use. The Toronto 18 plot, which aimed to storm Parliament Hill and bomb locations in Toronto to demand the withdrawal of Canadian troops from Afghanistan, was dismantled in 2006.
