Zakopane education reforms and national school meal debates spark controversy
In Zakopane, local education reforms are causing tension as city councilors report they have not been granted access to a 300-page audit. The document, which contains recommendations for creating a Common Services Center, has been withheld from officials due to data protection (RODO) concerns. While school directors have been briefed, councilors argue that the lack of transparency prevents meaningful discussion regarding potential staff changes and institutional restructuring.
Separately, on a national level, the Polish Ministry of National Education has addressed complaints regarding new school meal guidelines. Parents have reported that children are refusing meals due to an increased frequency of legumes and vegetables. Deputy Minister Paulina Piechna-Więckiewicz defended the dietary changes, stating that “nutrition is not an ideology” and that the regulations, developed by the Ministry of Health, aim to combat rising rates of childhood overweight and obesity by promoting dietary diversity.
