Zakopane faces criticism over loss of tradition and commercialization

The Polish mountain resort of Zakopane is facing significant criticism from both locals and tourists regarding its declining cultural character and increasing commercialization. Residents and visitors have expressed frustration over the transformation of the city into what some describe as a loud, chaotic fairground.

Issues cited include excessive advertising, loud music, smoke from street vendors, and aggressive marketing tactics, such as the use of lasers to attract customers. Critics argue that these elements destroy the traditional atmosphere and regional identity that travelers seek when visiting the Tatra Mountains.

Author Beata Sabała-Zielińska notes that the architectural heritage of the Podhale region has suffered as traditional wooden construction has been replaced by brick and modern apartment buildings. She suggests that while external investors contribute to the aesthetic decline, local economic shifts and a desire for rapid profit have also played a role in changing the region's character.
