Zakynthos celebrates feast of patron Saint Dionysios
Zakynthos is celebrating the feast of its patron saint, Saint Dionysios, with a series of religious ceremonies. The festivities mark the 309th anniversary of the transfer of the Saint’s Holy Relics from the Strofadia Islands to Zakynthos, an event that occurred in August 1717.
The scheduled events include a Holy Vigil, Divine Liturgy, and a procession of the Saint’s sepulchral shrine through the city. The ceremonies involve various local groups, including the Zakynthos Municipal Band, local scout troops, and representatives from various educational and cultural organizations.
Saint Dionysios, born in Zakynthos in 1547, was a highly educated individual who later entered monastic life. He served as the Bishop of Aegina before spending his final years at the Monastery of the Theotokos of Anafonritissa, where he passed away in 1622.
