Zakynthos forest fire triggers emergency evacuations

A forest fire broke out in the Eliés area of Zakynthos, Greece, on the afternoon of August 11, 2026. The emergency prompted the 112 alert system to issue warnings and evacuation orders, instructing residents in the Eliés area to move toward Volimes.

Firefighting efforts involved 27 firefighters, a specialized mountain team, and nine ground vehicles. Aerial support included four aircraft and two helicopters. Additional reinforcements, including 16 firefighters and five vehicles, were scheduled to be transported by ferry from the port of Kyllini to assist in the operation. While the situation in Eliés has shown signs of improvement, emergency services remain on-site to continue containment efforts.
