Zakynthos General Hospital faces critical pediatric staffing shortage

The Union of Hospital Doctors of Zakynthos (ENIZ) has issued a formal complaint regarding the critical lack of pediatric coverage at the Zakynthos General Hospital. According to the union, the pediatric clinic effectively exists ‘only on paper,’ as there are currently no pediatricians available for morning shifts or on-call duty schedules.

To manage pediatric cases arriving at the emergency department, the hospital is currently relying on doctors from other specialties, rural doctors, and private pediatricians. The union warned that relying on the goodwill of private practitioners and non-specialized staff is an unacceptable and dangerous solution for child safety.

The shortage is particularly concerning as it coincides with the peak tourist season in Zakynthos. Furthermore, the union noted that the absence of pediatric services makes the practical operation of the maternity clinic impossible. ENIZ is calling on the Ministry of Health and the 6th Health Region to provide immediate, permanent staffing and a clear plan for emergency coverage.
