Zakynthos Hospital Faces Critical Staff Shortages Amid Tourist Season
The Union of Hospital Doctors of Zakynthos warned that the General Hospital of Zakynthos is on the brink of collapse during the peak tourist period. The internal medicine department is operating with only one doctor instead of the five positions required, while the pediatric clinic relies on a single permanent pediatrician who is forced to cover daily on‑call shifts. Nephrology and cardiology are similarly understaffed, and the pulmonology clinic remains closed, staffed only by a doctor with a temporary “block”. Nursing staff is working at roughly 60 % of the needed level.
The hospital is also overwhelmed by a surge in severe traffic accidents involving illegal “guarones” vehicles, which the doctors describe as a “large amusement‑park” that kills and maims young people. Over 90 % of fatal or serious injuries involve youths, and 99 % of these cases are taken to the Zakynthos hospital. The surgical department has only four of six doctor posts filled, adding to the strain. The doctors are calling for immediate hiring of permanent staff, incentives for recruitment, and an upgrade of the emergency department to an autonomous unit with specialized personnel to prevent an inevitable collapse.
