Zakynthos hospital sees surge in assault reports amid tourist-season overload
Between 15 June and early August 2026, eight female tourists sought care at the General Hospital of Zakynthos reporting rape or sexual assault, a rise from roughly two similar cases in the same period last year. Hospital president Michalis Giannakos said the incidents were largely linked to the Laganas tourist area and that many victims were under the influence of alcohol.
The emergency department is operating under extreme pressure, treating more than 200 patients daily, about 80 % of whom are tourists. Common cases involve traffic accidents with quad‑bike “guarantees”, acute alcohol poisoning and other injuries typical of the high‑season influx. Staff promptly notified the Hellenic Police and the public prosecutor; forensic and gynecological examinations were performed, but no prosecutions have been filed because the victims did not identify alleged perpetrators.
Police records show three formal complaints and two arrests related to the alleged assaults. Giannakos compared the hospital’s daily emergency load to that of large Athens hospitals, which normally see 800‑1 000 patients only every four days, underscoring the strain on local health services.
