Zakynthos plans beach expansion to protect historic shipwreck

The Naftia beach on the island of Zakynthos, a well‑known tourist landmark featuring a historic shipwreck, is suffering from long‑term coastal erosion. Technical studies propose an artificial shoreline extension of about 30 metres and reinforcement of roughly 190 metres of coast, using sand‑gravel fill to create a wider sand zone and increase the distance between the waves and the wreck.

The aim is to preserve the visual character of the beach, safeguard the shipwreck and maintain the area’s tourism value. Environmental groups and some scientists have warned that the large‑scale intervention could affect the natural balance, while supporters argue it is essential to protect a national heritage site.
