Agios Leonidas primary school closed due to flea infestation

The Agios Leonidas Primary School in Zakynthos has been closed indefinitely following a flea infestation that affected students and teachers during a religious blessing ceremony. Although the issue was reportedly identified in late August by school staff and municipal workers, the infestation persisted despite three previous attempts at pest control on September 7 and 10.

Local authorities, including Deputy Mayor Nikos Aktypis, stated that disinfection efforts have expanded to neighboring properties. The infestation is believed to have originated from stray dogs and cats roaming freely in adjacent areas.

In response to the failure of previous treatments, municipal services have initiated daily spraying sessions. This intensive process is expected to last two to three days to ensure that both adult fleas and their eggs are eradicated before the school is deemed safe for reopening.
