Zakynthos schools host environmental and nutritional education initiatives

Primary schools in Zakynthos are participating in various educational programs focused on environmental awareness and local nutrition. In collaboration with the Hellenic Ornithological Society, the Zakynthos Directorate of Primary Education held sessions at Vasilikos Primary School and the 6th Primary School to teach students about biodiversity and the protection of migratory birds.

As part of this initiative, the Hellenic Ornithological Society donated the educational game ‘Operation Swift’ to all primary schools on the island. The game aims to teach children about the migratory journeys of birds, such as the swift, and the threats they face, including illegal hunting and habitat degradation.

Separately, the Agro-nutrition Partnership of the Ionian Islands Region is conducting activities at Ampelokipon Primary School to promote healthy eating and local products. The program highlights the nutritional value of Zakynthian staples, such as olive oil, honey, cheese, and raisins, through interactive sessions and the ‘From Grape to Raisin’ experiential activity.
