Zakynthos water meter project under investigation for irregularities
An audit by the Ionian Islands Program Management Special Service has identified 22 irregularities regarding a water meter and telemetry installation project in Zakynthos. The findings, stemming from an inspection in May 2025, include changes to the contract's physical object, incomplete system functionality, and procedural or tender-related discrepancies.
The project, which involves the Municipal Water and Sewerage Company (DEYA) of Zakynthos, was co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund with a total public expenditure of approximately €2.64 million. The audit report suggests the recovery of nearly €400,000 if immediate compliance is not met. Furthermore, if the project is not fully operational by the end of 2026, it is proposed that the entire expenditure, exceeding €2.5 million, be recovered.
The European Public Prosecutor's Office has reportedly been informed of the case as part of a broader investigation into the potential misappropriation of community resources through the procurement of digital water meters by various municipalities.
