Zakynthos: Woman arrested and fined 30,000 euros for cat death

A 63-year-old woman in Romiriou, Zakynthos, has been arrested and issued a 30,000 euro administrative fine following the death of a cat. The animal was found strangled with a cord around its neck, wedged into a traditional food preparation vessel in the woman's yard.

The victim, the cat's owner, is the daughter-in-law of the accused. While the 63-year-old claims she only went to investigate the scene and denies involvement, the owner has filed a supplementary complaint. The owner suggests that two small children under the woman's supervision may have accidentally caused the death while playing, potentially making the woman liable for negligence.

The Zakynthos Animal Care Group (ZOMZ) has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the incident, calling for swift legal procedures. Under updated Greek legislation, animal abuse and killing carry heavy penalties, including fines ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 euros and potential imprisonment.
