Zalando introduces AI agents to automate online shopping

European e-commerce giant Zalando has announced a new technological initiative called “Zalando Extended,” which utilizes AI agents to allow customers to purchase products from third-party retailers without leaving the Zalando application. This move toward “agentic commerce” aims to enable digital assistants to handle the entire shopping process, including price comparisons and order completion.

The company has launched a pilot program with Westwing, a home and living retailer, to integrate products into the Zalando ecosystem. By 2027, Zalando expects its AI agents to be capable of autonomously managing payment and ordering processes on behalf of users.

The announcement coincides with Zalando’s third-quarter financial results, which showed revenues of approximately 3.17 billion euros, a 5.1 percent increase compared to the previous year. While the company reported growth in gross merchandise volume, its gross profit margin fell below market expectations due to ongoing investments. Following the financial report, Zalando shares experienced a 5 percent decline in early trading, though analysts at Jefferies & Company Inc. maintained a “Buy” rating with a price target of 35 euros.
