Zambia adds 100 MW solar plant to strengthen energy security

Zambia inaugurated the 100 MW Chisamba II Solar Power Plant, doubling the Chisamba Solar Complex to a total of 200 MW. The US$70 million project was opened by President Hakainde Hichilema and is intended to reduce the country's reliance on hydroelectric power, which has been strained by recent droughts. Officials said the added capacity will improve electricity reliability for households, businesses and key sectors such as mining, manufacturing and agriculture, while signalling Zambia’s commitment to clean‑energy investment.

Later this year, Lusaka will host the C&I Energy + Storage Summit (22‑23 Sept 2026), organized by VUKA Group. The event will explore flexible procurement, bankable power projects and grid reforms for large industrial users. Speakers from ZESCO, the Energy Regulation Board, Copperbelt Energy Corporation, the Zambia Association of Manufacturers and Zambia Sugar are expected to discuss open‑access frameworks, storage options and regional market integration, aiming to help industry secure stable, affordable power.
