Zambia marks 62nd independence anniversary amid economic and political debate

Zambia is commemorating its 62nd anniversary of independence under the theme ‘Zambia@62: Our Journey, Our Growth, Our Future’. President Hakainde Hichilema marked the occasion by reflecting on the nation’s history of peaceful leadership transitions and stability, highlighting the development of infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and power stations.

State House officials emphasized that the current generation’s focus must shift from political independence to economic emancipation through the ‘Grow Zambia Agenda’. This initiative aims to create jobs and increase treasury revenue to fund social sectors.

In contrast to the celebratory tone, Socialist Party president Dr. Fred M’membe has criticized the government, warning that the rule of law is being undermined. M’membe condemned the prolonged detention of opposition figures and critics beyond the constitutionally mandated 48-hour period, stating that such practices threaten constitutional democracy and human rights.

Additionally, Bank of Zambia Governor Dr. Denny Kalyalya has called for a national shift in mindset to ensure that natural resources and public spending translate into tangible employment and improved living standards for citizens.
