Zambia courts reopen after shutdown during election petition deadline
Zambian courts have reopened following a multi-day shutdown that coincided with the deadline to challenge the August 13 presidential election results. The closure, which affected the High Court, Supreme Court, and Constitutional Court, was attributed by officials to a security threat that has since de-escalated.
Opposition leader Brian Mundubile, who received 38 percent of the vote, had intended to contest the re-election of President Hakainde Hichilema, who secured 60 percent. Critics and opposition figures suggested the shutdown was a deliberate attempt to prevent the filing of election petitions before the constitutional deadline expired on Monday.
State House and the Zambia Police Service denied these allegations, stating the closures were part of intelligence-led preventive risk assessments to safeguard government institutions. While the Judiciary reported that no formal petition was filed in the Constitutional Court Registry by the August 24 deadline, Chief Justice Dr. Mumba Malila noted he received an electronic copy of a 'people's presidential petition' via private email. The Judiciary has referred this irregular delivery to the Constitutional Court for a ruling on proper filing procedures.
