Zambia election: Tensions rise as NRP-UP candidate reports raids and arrests

As Zambia holds its presidential election, tensions have escalated involving the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRP-UP). Presidential candidate Brian Mundubile cast his vote in Lusaka, describing the election as a ‘second independence’ aimed at restoring peace and the rule of law. Mundubile warned against vote manipulation in the Southern Province, noting reports of low voter turnout in areas perceived as United Party for National Development (UPND) strongholds.

Security concerns have intensified following an alleged raid on the NRP-UP media command centre in Ibex Hill. Running mate Makebi Zulu reported that plain-clothes officers entered the premises and fired live ammunition during a search for Parallel Voter Tabulation (PVT) equipment. Additionally, police reportedly moved toward Mundubile’s residence as supporters gathered to protect him. The NRP-UP has alleged the arrest or abduction of over 40 campaign members, while the government has accused opposition elements of attempting to destabilize the electoral process.

In Mazabuka Central, independent candidate Gary Nkombo cast his ballot at Ndeke Primary School. Nkombo wore a torn shirt as a symbol of defiance following a previous attack by UPND cadres. He described the voting atmosphere as calm and orderly, calling for national unity.
