Zambia environmental agency faces potential dissolution over pollution concerns
The Action Institute for Policy Analysis Centre (AIPAC) has expressed concern regarding reports that the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) could be dissolved due to mining pollution. The institute reacted to remarks attributed to Green Economy and Environment Minister Gilbert Siame, which suggested the agency might face dissolution if it fails to prevent environmental degradation.
AIPAC Executive Director Solomon Ngoma stated that while the ministry’s concern over pollution is appreciated, regulatory institutions should be empowered rather than undermined. Ngoma emphasized that ZEMA possesses qualified professionals capable of executing its mandate if allowed to operate independently and professionally without undue political pressure.
Additionally, AIPAC advised the newly appointed ZEMA Board to adhere to its statutory mandate and maintain a clear separation between policy oversight and day-to-day management operations to ensure good governance.
