Zambia expands Parliament with 40 new members under MMPR system

Zambia has expanded its parliamentary representation through the implementation of the Mixed Member Proportional Representation (MMPR) system under the Constitution Amendment Act Number 13 of 2025. The Electoral Commission of Zambia has validated 40 new Members of Parliament, including women, youths, persons with disabilities, and six student representatives.

While student unions and the United Party for National Development (UPND) have praised the move as a step toward inclusivity, the Socialist Party (SP) has raised concerns regarding the nomination process. SP National Youth Spokesperson Sconel Lusambo questioned whether the selections were based on merit and sacrifice or political loyalty, noting a perception that those who support the government were favored over those who criticize it. He urged the new legislators to represent the broader aspirations of Zambian youth rather than serving party interests.
