Zambia Extends Election Nomination Deadlines as Candidates Line Up for 2026 Vote

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) announced an extension of nomination periods for National Assembly, mayoral and council chairperson races, moving the original May 20‑21 deadlines to May 22. The change accommodates candidates who lost voter cards, with a special replacement window running May 20‑23 at the ECZ head office in Lusaka.

Presidential hopefuls are also filing their papers. Dr. Richard Silumbe, leader of the Leadership Movement Party, submitted his nomination and running‑mate documents, pledging land title deeds, infrastructure upgrades, water security and youth employment programmes if elected. The ECZ subsequently cleared Brian Mundubile of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity and his running mate Makebi Zulu as valid presidential candidates.

Former United Party for National Development (UPND) MP Garry Nkombo, feeling sidelined within his party, said he may run as an independent for the Mazabuka Central seat. The UPND also named Stanley Kakubo as its candidate for the newly created Kapiri West constituency. Zambia’s general election is scheduled for 13 August 2026.
