Zambia faces democratic decline due to extrajudicial detentions, warns former Attorney General

Former Zambian Attorney General Musa Mwenye has issued a warning regarding a decline in the country’s democratic standards. Mwenye stated that Zambia is currently experiencing instances of extrajudicial detention and the holding of political detainees.

He noted that individuals are being detained for political activities and mobilization without being brought before courts or following due process. Mwenye expressed concern that these actions jeopardize Zambia’s reputation as a regional model for the rule of law and good governance in Africa. He called on the government to either release these detainees or present them before a court of law to ensure legal due process is followed.
