Zambia faces international pressure over political detentions

The United Nations and the Zambian Human Rights Commission have raised alarms regarding the deteriorating human rights and democratic environment in Zambia following recent elections.

UN Special Rapporteur Gina Romero expressed grave concern over reports of widespread intimidation, voter assaults, and the arrest of hundreds of opposition supporters. Romero noted that some individuals have been detained for prolonged periods without formal charges and highlighted the dangerous precedent of treason charges against senior opposition leaders. She also cited a pattern of shrinking civic space, including the alleged arbitrary arrest of parliamentarians and civil society actors.

Concurrently, Human Rights Commission Chairperson Dr. Pamela Towela Sambo called for prompt due process for at least 84 people arrested in connection with election-related incidents. The Commission is monitoring several cases of prolonged detention, including individuals held for weeks without being charged and those facing treason charges. Dr. Sambo urged the Zambia Police Service and the National Prosecution Authority to review the legal status of all detainees, grant bail where appropriate, and release those held without lawful basis.
