Zambia political crisis intensifies after disputed election and security crackdown

Tensions are rising in Zambia following the August 13 presidential election, which saw incumbent Hakainde Hichilema secure a second term with approximately 60% of the vote. The runner-up, Brian Mundubile of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity, has contested the results, alleging irregularities and planning legal action.

Following the vote, a security operation in Lusaka’s Kabulonga area resulted in the death of former minister Mutotwe Kafwaya and the arrest of 11 individuals on treason-related charges. While the Zambian government maintains these are lawful investigations into national security threats and suspected militia activity, opposition leaders and human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and the United Nations, have condemned the actions as arbitrary arrests and a crackdown on peaceful dissent.

Brian Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, have gone into hiding under the protection of an international organization after being summoned by police for questioning. The Commonwealth has also intervened, calling for transparency and an end to political detentions. Meanwhile, the European Union noted procedural irregularities during the vote tabulation process.
