Zambia government opposes bail for Bishop Mwamba and others

The Zambian government has announced its intention to oppose bail for Bishop Trevor Mwamba and several co-defendants currently in custody. The group, which includes 18 individuals such as former presidential candidate Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu, faces charges of treason and prohibition of terrorism.

In constitutional bail proceedings before the Lusaka High Court, the defense and the state have agreed to join the Director of Public Prosecutions to the case. Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha argued that the application is criminal in nature, necessitating the DPP's involvement. The accused argue that their continued detention during ongoing investigations violates their constitutional rights.

A panel of three High Court judges, led by Judge Derrick Mulenga, is overseeing the matter. The hearing for the constitutional bail application is scheduled for October 28, 2026.
