Zambia implements new parliamentary representation and reaffirms UK ties
President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffirmed the bilateral partnership between Zambia and the United Kingdom, emphasizing mutual trust and investment. During a meeting with the UK Trade Commissioner for Africa, Alastair Long, Hichilema noted that his administration is working to better utilize the potential of British investments and cooperation to support national development.
In a separate domestic development, President Hichilema approved the election of Dr. Nelly B. K. Mutti as Speaker of the National Assembly. This transition coincides with the implementation of a new parliamentary representation system under Zambia’s amended Constitution.
The new system introduces 40 proportional representation seats to the National Assembly to ensure greater diversity: 20 seats for women, 15 for youths, and five for persons with disabilities. These seats are designed to complement constituency-based seats and provide guaranteed participation for these groups in national legislative affairs.
