Zambia Judiciary clarifies no presidential petition filed
The Judiciary of Zambia has clarified that no formal presidential election petition was filed with the Constitutional Court Registry as of August 25, 2026. This statement follows public speculation regarding legal challenges to the August 13 general election, in which Hakainde Hichilema was declared the winner.
Chief Justice Mumba Malila reported receiving documents labeled as ‘the people’s presidential petition’ via his private email address. The Chief Justice described this method of submission as ‘highly irregular’ but used his administrative powers to refer the documents to the Constitutional Court to determine if they constitute a valid filing.
While the documents were received privately, the Judiciary confirmed that no official lodgement had occurred at the court registry. Meanwhile, the Cabinet Office has announced the inauguration of President-elect Hakainde Hichilema for September 1, 2026.
