Zambia: LAZ calls for probe into death of former minister Mutotwe Kafwaya

The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has called for an independent and transparent investigation into the death of former Minister of Transport and Communications, Hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya. The death occurred following a security operation at the residence of presidential candidate Brian Mundubile in Kabulonga on August 14, 2026.

LAZ expressed grave concern regarding the circumstances of the shooting and the subsequent detention of several individuals linked to alleged armed conspiracies. The association noted inconsistencies between earlier public statements from senior government officials and emerging information, urging that the use of lethal force be thoroughly examined to ensure constitutional rights to life are upheld.

Political leaders, including Chishala Kateka of the New Heritage Party, have also highlighted the conflicting narratives between the government and the opposition. Concerns have been raised regarding the lack of clear information provided to the family of the deceased during the incident.
